Hunting Season Schedule – September 2021 thru February 2022
Hunting Season is upon us, and while that makes some of our friends happy, it frustrates others. Out of respect to all, the best we can do is to find a way to help everyone enjoy the land in whatever way they are most comfortable.
There is an overpopulation of deer in Southern Maryland, which causes problems for our forests and other native animals. Hunting is the best way to manage those issues. Plus, most of the hunters at ACLT are members and friends and dedicated lovers of nature and the land.
From September to February, hikers can use this calendar to choose trails that have no hunting or choose mixed use trails if they don’t mind hiking where there’s hunting.
NOTE: Gun hunting is not permitted at any time on the south side trails. On all other trails, no hunting is allowed after 9 a.m. on Sundays* (except December 5th – see note below), so if you’d rather not hike while folks are gun hunting, visit South Side Trailhead any day of the week or hike any and all trails on Sundays after 9 a.m.
For peace of mind, we encourage everyone to consider the following suggestions:
When in the forests, wear bright colors (orange and red are especially good!) and avoid earth tones (browns, dark greens, etc.)
- Add a brightly colored item to your leashed dog as well for their safety.
- Look for signs displaying hunting season dates. ACLT will have them posted on both the website and at the trailheads.
- Avoid early morning and late evening hikes during those weeks.
As always, please reach out to a staff member with any questions or concerns! We can be reached at 410-414-3400 and at info@acltweb.org.

*There will be no gun hunting after 9 a.m. on the day we celebrate ACLT’s 35th Anniversary & Volksmarch at Holly Hill (scheduled for December 4th with a rain date of December 5th). If held on the 4th, gun hunting will be permitted all day Sunday, December 5th.
